Hello World!

I'm very happy to release the first version of RumIRum.eu! I'll document the major parts of its creation in this post, as I myself got very inspired by reading someone else's web creation process - more specifically Thistle Knight's - thanks!! As mentioned on the about page: "Rum i rum" is a play on words in Danish, alluding "room in space" in this context. It resembles the euphoria that I felt during my recent discovery of the web revival movement and all these amazingly creative and personal websites that are being created as we speak! Hence, i got super inspired and have since spent a couple of weeks on creating this contribution to the movement - here are the creative parts of what I did...

Aesthetic Choices

In visualisations for my research, I try to mostly use the colour maps of Fabio Crameri, who developed colour maps accessible to people with colour-vision deficiency. Hence, I thought it would be cool to use the batlow palette - here are some examples!

I went a bit further than this though... I used a screenshot of the batlow colour map and applied Darktable's color mapping function to all textures and images used for the 3D modelled room to get a unified expression! I also applied it to the Hubble telescope background image.

3D Modelling

One of my more recent rabbit holes has been 3D modelling in Blender. I collected some textures and photos from unsplash and 3D models from free3d.com to create the room. I linked the full list of credits at the bottom! The blinking light was then created using ezgif.com and two rendered images, one with high lighting and one with low lighting. The first gif was set to 1000 ms delay, followed by low/high/low-light frames at 7 ms. Finally, I copy+pasted the room image into inkscape, and hand drew three white, completely transparent svg areas to cover the three sides. Then, i layered this directly on top of the gif and made some javascript code to increase the opacity slightly when hovering across the room for a simple highlight effect!

I also re-rendered a black hole for the links page gif button. I previously made this for a sort of 3D music video (see Light and Dark Landscapes). This was just 1-to-1 following of a great YouTube tutorial by Iridesium. I also used the rembg python package to remove backgrounds to create a nice transparent gif, that preserves the blackness beyond the event horizon.

Back End

The structure of this website is a Django app, hosted on Heroku. That is ridiculously overkill for a web revival homepage that could easily be hosted on some static hosting platform like neocities..! However, I somehow enjoy the puzzle and grind of learning Django, managing databases and building my own blog-, guestbook-pages or other dynamic stuff. I should also say that it is not my first experience with Django, but I haven't used it for professional stuff ...yet... ..maybe I'll do another blog about my dashboard and home-server setup in the future!
